The slab of glass in your pocket is the result of three decades of incremental engineering. The history is more interesting than the marketing usually suggests.

The IBM Simon

The first device that historians commonly identify as a smartphone was the IBM Simon Personal Communicator, released in 1994. It combined a mobile phone with a touchscreen, a calendar, an address book, an email client, and a handful of basic applications. It weighed roughly half a kilogram, had about an hour of battery life, and cost around $900. By any modern standard it was clunky. As a proof of concept, it pointed forward.

The Pre-iPhone Era

For most of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the smartphone market was dominated by devices aimed at business users. The Palm Treo, the BlackBerry, and a series of phones running Symbian and Windows Mobile competed primarily on email, calendar, and corporate-friendly features. Physical keyboards were standard. Screens were small, often non-touch, and applications were limited.

These devices are easy to dismiss in retrospect, but they did real work. BlackBerry in particular built a near-monopoly on mobile email in many enterprises and government agencies, and its devices were genuinely loved by users who depended on them.

The 2007 Inflection Point

The release of the iPhone in 2007 marked a recognizable turning point. The combination it introduced — a full-screen capacitive multi-touch display, a desktop-class mobile web browser, and a tightly integrated hardware-software stack — was widely copied. The launch of the App Store the following year established the model that has dominated mobile software ever since: third-party developers writing applications, distributed through a centralized marketplace, running on top of a controlled operating system.

Google's Android platform, released in 2008, took the same general approach but distributed it more widely across many hardware manufacturers. By the early 2010s, the global smartphone market had effectively consolidated around two operating systems: iOS and Android. That duopoly has persisted ever since.

What Changed Underneath

Year over year, smartphones became more capable in fairly predictable ways. Processors moved from single-core to multi-core. Camera systems gained multiple lenses, larger sensors, and computational photography techniques. Storage and memory grew several orders of magnitude. Cellular connectivity progressed from 2G to 3G to 4G LTE to 5G.

The cumulative effect was that the smartphone displaced a long list of standalone devices: the standalone digital camera, the GPS unit, the portable music player, the pocket calculator, the alarm clock, the address book, the paper map. Many people no longer own most of those things at all.

From Niche Tool to Default Computer

By the mid-2010s, smartphones had become the primary way most people accessed the internet, eclipsing desktop and laptop computers in total time spent online. In many parts of the world, particularly in regions where wired broadband infrastructure was thin, smartphones were the only computer most users had ever owned.

The history is sometimes told as a single jump, from "no smartphones" to "smartphones everywhere," with 2007 as the date stamp. The longer view, starting with the IBM Simon in 1994, is closer to the truth: the smartphone took roughly 15 years to evolve from a curiosity into the dominant personal computing device on the planet.
